What is different about pregnancy massage?

Massage therapists complete special training in order to work with pregnant women. Logically, it is important for therapists to understand the changes that women go through during their pregnancy to ensure a safe and effective massage. Certain areas of the body have to be avoided and massage has to be modified at different stages of pregnancy. Additionally, special stretches or strengthening exercises are given, which are geared toward the changes in your body and preparing it for labor. Special precautions are taken to work with the pregnant body, so your therapist will take extra care in finding out about your pregnancy. As long as you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy then massage will be beneficial for you. If there are any contraindications then your doctor will be notified before the massage.

Once you can no longer lie face down or face up on the table, you lie on your side supported with cushions so you are comfortable getting a massage up to the day you give birth. (We don’t endorse the tables with holes in them due to the fact they can’t be sized to your belly and therefore can do harm by stretching the ligaments supporting your uterus.) You can still get a really good massage while being pregnant and will probably need one more than ever, so make it part of your healthy routine.

What is a labor doula and why would I hire one?

A labor doula is a birth advocate who offers physical, emotional, and informational support to women throughout their birth experience. The birth doula attends the labor and in essence, ‘mothers the mother’. There are also postpartum doulas who offer support after the baby is born (go to birthresourcenetwork.org for postpartum doulas in San Diego County).

The role of the doula is to make the family feel safe and confident. Some of the specific things that a doula does is to suggest different postural change and breathing techniques, massage the mother, monitor the environment for comfort and security, and help with relaxation and concentration. Although the focus of a doula is on the pregnant woman, there is no doubt great benefits for the women’s partner. This experience is usually new and uncomfortable for the partner so having a doula with birth experience to guide and engage them in the experience is reassuring.

You are encouraged to seek out and find a doula who is right for you. A labor doula plays a very intimate role and the family’s comfort is essential. While building your birth team (choosing a doctor, midwife, location, etc…), think about the role you want a doula to play as part of that team and find someone who will compliment those needs.
